Public top sales of domain names in 2020

2020 has been a challenging year, to say the least.

For several companies, the pandemic has meant a rushed digital readjustment. Business ideas have been sharpened, ways of working evaluated. We have ordered more food online and participated in more live-streamed Instagram workout sessions than ever.

At Dotkeeper, we have noticed a record-breaking number of requests for selling domain names. Domain name owners are checking their assets and wondering if that desirable domain name would have been more useful simply as money sitting in a bank account. In much the same way, companies with a strong finance might be in a position to cut a good deal and maybe make a grab for that domain name they have long been yearning for.

From an international perspective, the pandemic has resulted in a mixed bag for the domain name aftermarket (as it is called when registered domains switch owners). An increased interest combined with an overall tighter budget.

According to NameCheap, who have published the top ten public sales for the first half of 2020, the top sale so far would only qualify as the 5th highest on the mid-year list 2019.

Top 5 sales:

  1. OA.com, 554 000 €
  2. 151.com, 415 000 $
  3. Palace.com, 306 000 $
  4. Kick.com, 276 077 $
  5. Results.com, 264 000 $
