A fast start for the .app domain

Last week saw Google, via its Charleston Road subsidiary, launch the .app top-level domain. This development has been eagerly anticipated, and it’s fair to say it has taken the market by storm. According to the well-regarded Domain Name Wire, over 100,000 domain names were registered on the first day of general release.

The word app is a shortened form of applications, and the increasing use of apps has prompted a huge wave of interest in the .app domain. Before its general release, Google had accepted tens of thousands of pre-registrations which led to 30,000 new domains popping up during the first three minutes of general availability.

As of today – just one week after the general release – there are over 201,000 registered domain names ending in .app, an extraordinary number if you ask us. This means that .app is already the 22nd most registered of the batch of newly released top-level domains. In the place behind – number 23 – is .store which currently features on around 193,000 domain names.

Of the newly released top-level domains, .top has the most registrations – more than 2.5 million at the time of writing. We at Dotkeeper have also noticed high demand for .shop – it lies 8th on the list with over 555,000 registrations.
